Unity of Stockton Moving News
Where we are today: Spiritually: We have stepped into the “void”, the “wilderness” in faith, the place where we have moved out of our comfortable buildings and habits. We have not yet “seen” or “established” the new place and practices! We are right on target in the right timing on our spiritual journey. It is really important that we listen carefully to our guidance as we build the vision of who we will be as we grow our community in service of the spiritual growth of Stockton and the San Joaquin Valley. A clear vision will help us find our place. Let’s talk every single Sunday as we grow together. Physically: For January, on Sundays, we will meet at Locke Center at Delta College.

Classes will be on hold until February. We will not have “Office Hours” in January but Marylee will be available by phone. Either leave a message at the office phone or call her directly on her cell phone! A Little History About Our Move: Last summer, we decided that it was time to move from our buildings that served us for so many years in downtown Stockton. Our vision was to move further north into Stockton and to find a location with abundant parking, configured with spaces for lots of classes and workshops in order to reach out to those in Stockton looking for a center dedicated to “Mind, Body, & Spirit”. Our Vision is compelling and our board was unanimous in taking this step. We consulted with realtors who cautioned us that this was a difficult time for real estate, and to “not get our hopes up to sell in less than a year or two.” Both commercial realtors helped us find a listing price. We decided that the best course of action was to list the buildings and let Spirit provide the buyers if it was indeed time to move. We had interest by our buyers in less than a month. In fact, Open Door House of Prayer’s minister had seen our building and knew that it would be perfect for their community years earlier! We accepted an offer with a down payment and we will “hold the note” thereby earning good interest in the years to come. We have an unprecedented Unanimous Vote from the Congregation to move forward by selling our old buildings. Our last day at our “old” buildings was January 1, 2012. Our closing was January 3, 2012. NOW IT IS TIME TO BUILD AND GROW OUR COMMUNITY! It is our intention to rent and grow our community, and also to vigorously save towards building and purchasing new buildings. Our Vision for the Next Steps: We started by looking for a space that would include Sunday meeting space, rooms for Youth Education, classrooms and offices. Locating this property and working with the City of Stockton for all the proper permits has proved to be a large undertaking! We found a lovely place at 2105 W. March Lane but negotiating the permits is proving difficult. We are in process with this option. We also have looked at renting an "office and classroom space" and holding Sunday Services in a separate place that already has an assembly use permit, like a hotel, school or another meeting room. We have also considered choosing to meet in the afternoon at another church! We have found several possible office locations, but have not taken steps in that direction while we looked for an “all in one” space first. Check back often for more information!
